We met Tawd b. Dorenfeld at the OCALICON-2018 conference on Autism. Tawd is a talented artist, writer, instructor, director, movie producer and animator, who has turned his talents toward helping others; especially those on the autistic spectrum, to express themselves through art. Many autistic people have narrow but strong talents, yet are weak in supporting skills. Tawd assists them in learning the skills needed to hone and expand their talents such that their lives are greatly enriched. Tawd's projects may involve Writing, Poetry, making Animated Shorts, Videos, Illustrations, Comics, Books, Universal Products, Graphic Design, Audio-Plays, Audio-Books, Electronic Music and Sound Design. Sometimes these projects lead students into new careers! See much more at his website.
We met Tim Harris at the OCALICON 2015 Convention on Autism, where we had a Booth. Tim was a featured speaker who lifted our hearts with his energy, attitude and achievements. He was born with Down Syndrome, but pursued his dreams anyway, graduated from college and started Tim's Place, the “World's Friendliest Restaurant”. Tim also started Tim's Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), a non-profit corporation that aims to inspire people from all over the world to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives. His accomplishments are way too many to list here, so I encourage you to visit his website and be inspired!
A few years ago, a young woman engineer with a vision, Debbie Sterling, started a company, Goldie Blox, making products that teach engineering concepts. Her products are focused especially on young girls. Today, she is offering more than a dozen really great stimulating products for young children. Check it out, read her story, and peruse her products. You will likely find great gifts for your child.
We met Tammy Andersson at the OCALICON 2015 Convention on Autism, where she had the adjacent booth. She offers a wide collection (~1000) of stimulating toys. Having had a son diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome led her to seek toys that would bring the most benefit. This effort culminated in the store Got Special KIds, run by her and her husband. Their focus is on Autism and related conditions but most of these products would be great for all young developing minds.
We learned about Conscious Discipline through Larry Slocum who is now retired as a Conscious Discipline® certified instructor. We met Larry at his Conscious Discipline booth at an OAEYC convention. The Conscious Discipline message he taught builds a self-awareness of the internal balance between Emotion and Intellect …the composite of which drives our lives. This message appeals to children as well as to adults, in fact many of the lessons are designed to help adults understand and teach these to their children. It is through healthy management of our emotions that we free-up our intellect to allow us to develop to our fullest potential …which brings us happiness and contentment.
We visited their booth at a Homeschool convention in May 2016. Their focus is on "Brain Training". They also work with those who are considered: typical, accelerated, and gifted to improve their overall function and continue making progress in all areas of learning. Founded by Dr. Jan Bedell, PH.D, B.S, M.ND, M.Ed, Certified Teacher, and Certified Master Neurodevelopmentalist and with a talented staff, there is something here for everyone!
